Everyone loves hot cider so Liddon offers us her healthy take on the classic here with heart-helping cinnamon. What better place to drink this warm and sweet apple cider than by the campfire? She suggests also thinking outside the mug, though. “It sounds strange,” she says, “but any homemade juice can also be made into a hot drink. One of my favorite juices from Fresh restaurant in Toronto is a hot juice called the Flu Fighter. Celery, carrot, garlic, cayenne, kale, lemon, ginger and echinacea are juiced together and heated up to create one of the most nutritious hot juices I’ve ever tasted.
1 jug apple cider
1 orange peel
4-5 whole cloves
4-6 cinnamon sticks
4-6 TBSP sugar, or to taste
Serves six to eight. Place orange peel, cloves, and cinnamon sticks in a cheesecloth tied in a knot. Pour apple cider in a medium-sized pot and drop in the cheesecloth. Bring to a low boil over the campfire or camp stove and reduce heat. Stir in sugar to taste. Simmer for at least 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to develop. Carefully remove the cheesecloth and serve.
