One of the most popular fun family camping destinations in New Mexico is the White Sands National Monument. White Sands National Monument is an extremely unique camping destination in New Mexico. Family camping in White Sands National Monument has a lot to offer everyone.

While family camping in White Sands National Monument, there is plenty to do, including biking, hiking, guided tours or even viewing the scenery from the comfort of your own vehicle. There are daily, one hour, guided Sunset Strolls which offer an amazing way to see the park at dusk. There are also 4 great hiking trails if your family wishes to explore the park on its own. The four trails each offer unique experiences and activies. The Dune Life Nature Trail is located along the edge of the dunes and has lots of vegetation and wildlife. The Alkali Flat Trail is a 4.6 mile hike through dunes.  The Interdune Boardwalk is an elevated boardwalk which is wheelchair accessible. The short Playa Trail  leads to a small low lying area that fills with water after a rainfall. Another fun activity while family camping in White Sands National Monument is dune  jumping or dune sledding down the face of the sand dunes. Stargazing is another fun activity on moonless nights.

There is a $3 entrance fee per person which is good for seven days. Children 15 and under are free. An annual pass for White Sands National Monument costs $20. An annual interagency pass that grants access to most national parks is $80. You can expect fees for special activities, such as tours of Lake Lucero ($3 for adults and $1.50 for kids 15 and under.)

The climate at the Tularosa Basin can be extremely abrasive and change abruptly as it’s desert climate. You can expect extremely hot Summers with temperatures above 100. The Winter days are fairly temperate with night time lows often dropping below 32 degrees. The Weather can change without warning so you should always be prepared for any conditions.

With so many activities to choose from, fun family camping in White Sands National Monument really makes an excellent New Mexico camping destination.
